Museum-Quality〓In the Qing Dynasty, a monumental gilt statue of Mahakala, the Guardian of the Sacred Scepter, was crafted in Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Mahakala holds significance across various sects of Tibetan Buddhism, each depicting him differently. In the Tibetan Vajrayana tradition, Mahakala is revered as a protector deity, often considered the chief among the protectors.
Unlike the multitude of forms of Mahakala, traditionally believed to number up to 75, this two-armed Mahakala with a sacred scepter is unique to the Sakya sect and is not typically worshipped as a guardian deity. Also known as the Great Black One, Mahakala is the guardian deity of palaces, knowledge, and wealth, and is considered the wrathful emanation of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra.
This particular statue of Mahakala, adorned with a sacred scepter, is imposing in size and grandeur, with thick layers of gilt gold adorning its entire surface, maintaining its pristine condition. The figure of the deity is stout and squat, with three eyes and a five-skull crown adorning the head. The mouth is open, revealing fangs, while the right hand holds the iconic vajra-tipped curved knife, and the left hand cradles a skull cup, with a red staff held between the fingers. The deity's bare-chested form treads upon obstacles and malevolent forces, with flames of boundless intensity emanating from the background, symbolizing Mahakala's fierce power.
The proportionate and imposing stature of the statue fully encapsulates the mystery and potency of the Guardian of the Sacred Scepter. Such a well-preserved gilt statue of this size, with intact attributes like the curved knife and red staff, is exceedingly rare and can be deemed museum-quality.
